L'amplification de lumière se produit en faisant circuler le signal optique dans un milieu d'émission spontanée dont la fluorescence correspond à la longueur d'onde du signal. Le transfert d'énergie se fait de la fluorescence au signal amplifié. En pratique, le faisceau de pompage et le signal à amplifier sont injectés dans la fibre dopée à l'erbium par le biais d'un coupleur. Le signal est alors amplifié tout au long de la fibre dopée qui répond à des critères spécifiques.
